They are widely used in cell culture, microbiology, and molecular biology. The primary difference is that a serological pipette is a "blow-out" pipette (indicated by etched rings at the top), meaning the final remaining drop of liquid must be blown out to achieve full volume accuracy. In contrast, a Mohr pipette is a self-draining pipette where the graduation marks stop before the tip, and the residual liquid should not be expelled.

2. What do the different color-coded rings on serological pipettes signify?

The color-coded bands at the top of serological pipettes conform to ISO international standards for quick visual identification of pipette capacities, allowing laboratory personnel to immediately select the correct pipette size without reading fine print—yellow for 1 mL, green for 2 mL, blue for 5 mL, orange for 10 mL, red for 25 mL, and purple/black for 50 mL.

3. Why do serological pipettes contain a cotton/filter plug at the top?

The high-quality barrier plug (typically made of polyester or cotton) inserted at the top of the pipette serves a dual protective purpose:

Contamination Prevention: It prevents aerosols and liquids from entering and contaminating the electronic pipette controller or manual bulb.
Sample Protection: It stops any external contamination inside the controller from blowing back into the sterile sample or culture media.

Note: If the filter plug gets wet due to over-aspirating, the pipette must be discarded as the filter will block airflow.

4. What is the meaning of "TD" and bidirectional graduations on the pipette?

TD (To Deliver): Most serological pipettes are marked with "TD" or "Ex", indicating they are calibrated to deliver the exact stated volume of liquid when properly discharged, accounting for the fluid that naturally clings to the inner walls.
Bidirectional Graduations: These pipettes feature ascending scales on one side (to read how much fluid has been dispensed) and descending scales on the other side (to read how much fluid remains), offering maximum flexibility during multi-well plating or continuous dispensing workflows.

5. Are plastic serological pipettes reusable, and what are their sterility standards?

Standard polystyrene (PS) plastic serological pipettes are strictly designed for single-use (disposable) only. Reusing them increases the risk of cross-contamination and inaccurate measurements. To ensure maximum biological safety, they are pre-sterilized via Gamma Irradiation or ETO gas, individually wrapped in paper-plastic or plastic packaging, and certified to be DNase/RNase-free, pyrogen-free (endotoxin-free), and non-cytotoxic for sensitive tissue culture applications.
