Cell Culture Coverslips

Cell culture coverslips (or cover glasses) are primarily used for growing adherent cells directly on a thin glass substrate. They are essential for high-resolution imaging applications such as immunofluorescence (IF), confocal microscopy, and live-cell imaging. Since standard plastic culture plates have high autofluorescence and poor optical clarity, cultivating cells on specialized glass coverslips allows researchers to transfer the cells directly onto microscope slides for optimal optical performance.

• TC-Treated Coverslips: Undergo physical or chemical surface modification to create a hydrophilic, negatively charged surface, which enhances general adherent cell attachment.
• Coated Coverslips (Poly-D-Lysine/Collagen): Pre-coated with extracellular matrix proteins or synthetic polymers. These provide specific biological or electrostatic cues, which are strictly required for fastidious or primary cells (such as neurons, stem cells, or primary hepatocytes) that struggle to adhere to standard TC surfaces.

Coverslip thickness is critical for the optical correction of high-magnification microscope objectives (especially oil-immersion lenses). No. 1.5 coverslips feature a standard thickness of 0.16mm to 0.19mm (typically 0.17mm). Most modern high-numerical aperture (NA) objectives and confocal microscopes are precisely calibrated for No. 1.5 glass. Using incorrect thicknesses (like No. 1) can cause severe spherical aberrations, resulting in blurry images.

• 6-Well Plate: Recommended coverslip diameter is 22mm or 25mm.
• 12-Well Plate: Recommended coverslip diameter is 18mm or 20mm.
• 24-Well Plate: Recommended coverslip diameter is 12mm or 15mm.
